Once upon a time there was a little boy named Willie who grew up in a coal mining town in VA. This little boy was very adventurous and loved people. He loved people so much that he made friends with all kinds of kids. Even the black kids that he was told he couldn't be friends with...he just didn't understand why he would be told that, so his best friend was black. This little boy had to live through his mother dying when he was 9 years old and he soon learned that other mothers in the town wanted to help he and his brother. So, he learned how to iron at Ms. Linkus's house and even learned how to make cornbread. Not to long after his mother died his dad, who was a very hard working coal miner, remarried. This marriage didn't last very long, however, because the woman had a daughter who didn't get a long with this litte boys brother. Willie was so distraught because he was so excited to have a momma again. It wasn't too much longer until his dad met a nice woman named Minnie. Willie told his little brother to be on his best behavior, because he didn't want him to run off this momma! And he didn't! Minnie came along and took good care of Willie and his brother.
Willie always wanted a bicycle, but his family was too poor to afford one. He knew this little neighbor girl who had a bicycle and was so excited when she offered to teach him how to ride it and then let him ride it often. He decided then that one day he would name a daughter after that little girl.
Willie left this little town when he was 18 years old to join the Air Force. He fought in Korea and Vietnam. He traveled all over the world and had lots of friends. When he was about 40 years old, he decided that he wanted to settle down, so he retired from the service and moved to Virgina. He met a very nice lady at a bar one night and decided that she was the woman he wanted to marry.
They eventually did get married and they had a little girl....true to his word, he named that little girl after the girl that had let him ride her bike...Charlene.
That is my daddy!
My daddy has Alzheimer's and probably doesn't remember much of the story that I told to you just now. He also has cancer right now and it is really hitting his body bad. Daddy loves Jesus, but this is just a hard time. Please keep him in your prayers.

I will, Charlene. My momma passed away just last September, so I know something of the pain cancer causes. What a beautiful story.
