So, I read this book and I highly recommend it. It is a memoir of a girl who was raised Jewish (and then converted to Orthodox Judism) and then converted to Christianity. It really is much more than that...this book raises all sorts of good questions and really leaves me with so much to think about I think I need to read it again.
Some of the things I learned were Jewish celebrations and hebrew words and deeper meanings... like do you know what Sukkot is? I didn't. It is a celebration...a feast of Tabernacles to remind the israelites of the 40 years in the deserts and of how the Lord provided. The bible tells us about this celebration in Exodus 23, Leviticus 23, and Deuteronomy 16. Orthodox Jews actually build a sukkah in the back yard and eat their meals in it to remind them of their history. WOW! I think that is amazing.
But there are also things like this paragraph that really ring true to me:
"There are a few people out there with whom you fit just so, and, amazingly, you keep fitting just so even after you have growth spurts or lose weight or stop wearing high heels. You keep fitting after you have children or change religions or stop dyeing your hair or quit your job at Goldman Sachs and take up farming. Somehow God is gracious enough to give us a few of those people, people who you can stretch in to, people who don't go away, and who you wouldn't want to go away, even if they offered to."
I am fortunate to have *several friends like that...and you know who you are.. Thank you!!
I think I will give you more nuggets from this book later...stay tuned.
*Please note that I discovered that several means 3...not 5-7. So, I think I mean several here...for sure I mean a couple. M aybe a few...and if several DID mean 5-7, it is possible that I could mean that one day, but not now. Get it?
