Sometimes people ask me what it is like to live in Africa. And most of the time I think..."well, it isn't too different than living in the US"...and then the power goes out. Okay, so that is different.....that happens a lot.
Then there are days when it just feels like this is normal....
- walking up to my house and stepping over horse manure...NORMAL...
- killing spiders in the house..NORMAL...
- having a designated "Moth killer" when watching a movie at night (the are attracted to the light on the screen)...NORMAL....
- having my laundry done by a domestic worker..NORMAL (I like that one)...
- walking through tall grass constantly looking for snakes...NORMAL...
- driving around potholes in the roads...NORMAL...
- translating other "English" words in my head to "American English"...like DAM=LAKE; Bonnet= Hood; Serviette=Napkin; Still Water= normal water;....NORMAL...
- seeing a movie in the theater here that is already on DVD in the US....NORMAL
- reading by candlelight because the power is out.....NORMAL
So apparently it is a little different to live here, it is just that things that seemed so different don't seem that different after you have been here a while.
